Essential Navigation Commands#

Now that you understand the basics, let’s expand your navigation vocabulary with commands for moving around the screen efficiently.

Directional Navigation#

Beyond the basic left/right movement, VoiceOver provides comprehensive directional control:

Primary Movement#

The up and down arrows’ behavior depends on context:

  • In lists and tables, they move between rows

Application and Window Navigation#

The Application Chooser and Window Chooser provide lists of all open apps and windows, making it easy to switch between them.

The menu bar is your gateway to application commands:

  1. Press VO + M to go to the Menu Bar
  2. Use VO + Right/Left Arrow to move between menus
  3. Press VO + Space or Down Arrow to open a menu
  4. Use Up/Down Arrow to navigate menu items
  5. Press Return or VO + Space to activate
  6. Press Escape to close menus

Jumping Between Menu Areas#

This cycles between:

Dock Sections#

The Dock has three sections:

  • Applications (left/top)
  • Files and Folders (middle)
  • Trash (right/bottom)

Spotlight is the fastest way to find and open anything on your Mac:

  1. Press Command + Space to open Spotlight

VoiceOver works seamlessly with Spotlight, announcing search results as you navigate them.

Application Switching#

Switch between running applications:

When the application switcher appears:

  • Keep holding Command
  • Press Tab repeatedly to cycle through apps
